Statement on Iran
March 4, 2026
Canada has long viewed the Islamic Republic of Iran as the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East. The regime and its proxies have been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Canadians, thousands of Iranians, and immense suffering across the region. It maintains one of the worst human rights records in the world, brutally repressing its own people while supporting terrorist proxy groups beyond its borders.
Despite more than two decades of negotiations, diplomatic initiatives, sanctions, and multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions, Iran has neither dismantled its nuclear program nor halted its enrichment activities. Preventing the Iranian regime from developing nuclear weapons remains an imperative for international peace and security.
I support efforts by Canada and our international partners to ensure that Iran is never able to obtain a nuclear weapon and that its regime cannot continue to threaten regional and global stability. At the same time, the current conflict poses growing risks to civilian life across the Middle East. All parties must respect international law and the rules of armed conflict. I condemn any attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, and I urge all actors involved in this crisis, including Iran, Israel, and the United States, to act with restraint and to prioritize the protection of innocent lives.
I also stand firmly with the people of Iran in their long and courageous struggle for freedom and democracy. Across the country, protesters have been demanding an end to dictatorship and calling for a democratic and secular future. Thousands have reportedly been killed by repressive forces, many more injured, and thousands arrested. I pay tribute to the courage of the Iranian people in these tough times, especially women and youth, who continue to stand up for democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental freedoms despite enormous risks. Their aspirations deserve the support and attention of the international community.
Canada has taken significant steps to hold the Iranian regime accountable, including designating the IRGC as a terrorist entity and imposing sanctions on hundreds of Iranian individuals and entities. Canada has had no formal diplomatic relations with Iran since 2012 and has designated Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism under the State Immunity Act.
I will continue to advocate for policies that hold the Iranian regime accountable for its actions while supporting the legitimate aspirations of the Iranian people for freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights.
Sincerely,
Kristina Tesser Derksen, M.P.
